Ministry Overview

The music ministry of the Alan Ives family is called Concord & Harmony. They travel, ministering through preaching, teaching, singing, seminars, workshops, and music lessons. The Ives family serves primarily in local churches, Christian schools and Bible camps. They have a sizeable store of conservative Christian music and literature, and they carry a wide selection of items with them when they travel. Their main goal is to help maintain scriptural standards for music - in worship and in private life---and to provide good music for those who desire it. They endeavor to show from the Bible and from the study of music:

  1. what good music is.
  2. why good music is good.
  3. what bad music is.
  4. why bad music is bad.
The ministry warns of the damage worldly music can cause, and makes plain the value of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

The Difference Between Good and Bad Music a transcribed sermon by Alan Ives.

Biographical Information

Alan Ives was born in 1950 and grew up in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He had an interest and aptitude for music at a very young age, and by the time he was in Junior High school he began playing instruments, receiving instruction on clarinet and guitar. Alan began playing and singing in a rock band at the age of 12, and he continued until he was 21 years old. He trusted Jesus Christ as his Saviour in May of 1969. He struggled with rock music for almost two years after his conversion. Under the preaching of Pastor Howard Nelson, Alan became convicted by God's Word that rock music was inappropriate for a Christian. He quit playing in the rock band in the fall of 1971. He surrendered to be used of God for Christian service at that time.

In May of 1973, Alan began working on staff at Southside Baptist Church (now Wyldewood Baptist Church). His responsibilities included preparing music, going on visitation, working with youth, driving bus, assisting the treasurer and ministering at the rest homes. In September of 1973, he married Ellen Mathe, who was also from Oshkosh. By the spring of 1975, the church had outgrown its facilities, relocated to a larger plant, and Alan's responsibilities were broadened. Added duties included teaching Sunday school, preaching at the jail and teaching at the Christian school. He also became the assistant treasurer, taught music lessons, instructed in our Bible Institute, and oversaw the music for our "live" radio broadcast on Sunday mornings. Alan graduated from the Universtiy of Oshkosh with a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Music Education (K-12) in 1976. He was ordained to the gospel ministry in February of 1977.

In the fall of 1986, the Ives family began ministering in churches around the United States and Canada in music evangelism. They believe strongly in the ministry of the local church, and they have served in revivals; soul-winning and missions conferences; stewardship and sweetheart banquets; Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Patriotic programs; music concerts; anniversaries and other special church Sundays; summer Bible camp; jails and prisons; rest homes, private homes, and hospitals. They seek to win people to the Saviour wherever they go. They have been blessed with five children. The three youngest still live at home and travel with them.
